French Roulette

French Roulette is a popular variation of Roulette where you have 37 pockets versus the 38 pockets of the American version of the game. This is the most ancient version of all and the most advantageous in terms of odds. As you might understand intuitively, the fewer the pockets, the better your chances of winning, as the object of the game is to guess where the ball is going to land on the spin. Maybe because of its favourable odds, or maybe because of the charm of the French language spoken by the dealer, but one thing is clear: this game has gained worldwide popularity. Walk into almost any casino in the world (especially outside America), and you will find this table game! Casino Midas NZ proudly houses this classic and a few other versions of online Roulette as well.

The game of Roulette was crafted in its earliest form all the way back in the late 1600’s. In France, it evolved into French Roulette in some of the very first casinos ever built, making it one of the first legally played betting games in known history. When it was introduced to other parts of the world, new variations were introduced. In the United States, the game was changed to the wheel having an additional green zero pocket, increasing the house edge, and the layout of the betting area was changed to reflect the English language. European Roulette adopted the betting layout of American Roulette, but kept the design of the French wheel. However, no matter what variations have spawned or will spawn, French Roulette is the original and always will be.

How to Play

As with any other type of Roulette, this game is played by first placing bets across the table. The reel consists of 36 numbers, 18 red and 18 black. There is an extra slot for the zero that is coloured green. The first phase of the game is when players place chips on the betting area. In the physical version of the game, players can place bets on the table before the dealer spins the ball around the wheel, and even place bets while the wheel is spinning. The Dealer will wave his or her hand when no more bets can be placed and say, “Rien ne va plus,” which translates from French to: “No more bets.” When the ball comes clacking to a stop, the bets on the table are either lost or paid out depending on where the ball lands and where the chips were placed. The Dealer will take the chips that were bet and lost, and will reward the chips that were bet and won based on the predetermined payouts. If you do win, you can have a “fête,” which translated from French, means a celebration! Once the bets are paid out or taken, the game starts over and the same phases are repeated. However, in the online version, you can take as much time as you need to place a bet, but once you press spin, you cannot place additional bets.

The selectable boxes of the table have different symbols on them indicating parts of the board. When you put your cursor over certain spots, the winning numbers will be highlighted. You are guessing where the ball lands on the reel, the odds for certain spots being vastly different and affect how much you stand to win. For example, you can go double or nothing and guess which colour the ball lands on, or you can choose to guess that the ball will land on a specific number, which pays out 35 to 1. Hovering your cursor over the options does not just tell you which numbers your click applies to, but also the payouts of each one. The minimum inside bet is $1 and the maximum is $1000. The outside bet minimum is the same, but the maximum is $2000.

When your bets are set, you can hit the spin button and lock them in. Cross your fingers and hope that the clacking ball lands on your numbers. Since your total wager maximum is $3000, your total win potential is an incredible $41,000! If the ball lands on the green 0, you do not win the black or red bet. If you bet the zero, is gives you the same payout as the other numbers. Whatever you do win will be collected and added to your credit total. You can hit the repeat button to place the same bet, or reselect what you want to play.
